BUILDING COMMUNITY SINCE 2004
WHLI is about convening, promoting and connecting. We convene a class of 25-30 each year that promotes civic leadership by connecting with civic leaders on issues that impact West Houston. Our mission is to build a committed, informed, and engaged core of community leaders to care for West Houston.
CIVIC ENGAGEMENT. SOCIAL IMPACT.
COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP.
Community leadership programs identify issues of community interest, increase community networking, and increase understanding of civic responsibility. WHLI supports leaders who have a commitment to civic engagement, to learning, and to collaboration.
Government & Infrastructure Day
This session presents an overview of local government and its relationship to other governmental bodies. Our community’s elected officials meet, speak with, and interact with the class on issues that are important to West Houston. It is a goal of WHLI to familiarize the class with methods of effecting change through the governmental process.
Learn MoreTransportation Day
One of the most anticipated classes of the year, this session takes place at TransStar. Convene and hear from the leaders in Houston transportation. Class discusses challenges, funding issues, and overlap between city, county and state in regards to our roads. Class members gain a broader understanding of the challenges involved in traffic and transportation.
Learn MoreEducation Day
The WHLI class heads back to school for the education session. This class features information on the state of education and explores issues affecting educational achievement and the region's educational environment. Class members learn what local leaders are doing to ensure public education continues to be a vital part of the success of our children, youth, and life-long learners. Classes often feature presentations and panel discussions with Houston-area education administrators and local leaders. Past guests have included Houston Community College Northwest President Dr. Zachary Hodges, former Alief ISD Superintendent H.D. Chambers, Spring Branch ISD Associate Superintendent for Finance Christine A. Porter, and Spring Branch ISD Associate Superintendent for Communications and Community Engagement Linda Buchman.Â
